Administrative history

Henry Payne and Frederick Thompson were general dealers and importers who ran their business from 11 Castle Street, Bristol. Throughout December 1864 they advertised the sale of three sizes of commemorative medals struck to celebrate the opening of Clifton Suspension Bridge to be sold for 2d, 4d and 6d. The image of the Bridge was taken from a print based on a painting by H. Whatley (1841 - 1901). The print was published by Henry Hodder of Henry Hodder & Co Ltd who ran a chemist's shop from 11 Broad Street, Bristol from 1853 onwards. In 1872 Payne & Thompson was dissolved and from then on run under the name of Henry Payne.
