King Edward VII visited Bristol to open the new dock at Avonmouth on 9 July 1908. In the evening, after the opening celebrations, the King 'had a motor drive from Avonmouth to Bristol, and inspected the Clifton Suspension Bridge". Inscribed on reverse: 'M[...] I rec'd your letter with money alright, this A.M, & thank you very much for sending it me so quickly. Am making my further preparations for the exam. Am keeping well. I trust you are the same. Many thanks also for Papers. Write later. With love, P[eter]'

Inscribed on reverse: '[...] of it up here. We have Bruce home with us again. When he landed at Riverford he went straight to Moreton for a week. Poor old chap, he is not up to a lot, but he has improved a good deal since he landed. He was not half pleased to get back again. As far as we know at present, there is no fixed date for our going to Moreton, but expect it will not be until August. Could I only get another job I would not go. But I adored [Forburghs] & did not get anything. I think before many more years I shall move off abroad. But I have not saved enough [...] yet. Now I must chase, with kindest regards to all. Thought perhaps you would like [...]'

Addressed to Miss W. Valentine with a written message. The message includes that the bridge was lit up "on the night of the Kings visit. It looked so pretty, it was a grand day and I had a good view of them."
