In 1853 the chains intended to be used for the Clifton Suspension Bridge were sold and reused to form Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash. The bridge was opened by Prince Albert on 2 May 1859.

Built by Bedřich Schnirch in 1841, the bridge connected Národní třída across Střelecký Island with Újezd and Malá Strana. In 1898–1901 it was replaced by a new stone bridge and in 1919 the name was changed to the Legion Bridge.
